Investing.com -- AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) shares fell 3.5% after Edgewater Research analyst Joe Wittine cautioned that the mobile ad platform’s market share expansion has effectively stalled. Following fresh channel checks, Wittine set a materially lower bar for Wall Street, forecasting the company’s fourth-quarter revenue growth at just 8% to 9% quarter-over-quarter.
Wittine concluded that the company’s share of wallet (SOW) and share of voice (SOV) metrics are no longer consistently growing from their already industry-leading levels.
"This is primarily the inevitable result of MAX’s share reaching a functional ceiling, though our interpretation of feedback also increasingly indicates competition is compressing APP’s net revenue spreads, contributing to APP’s decel," Wittine wrote.
That two-pronged explanation—a supply ceiling and tightening competitive spreads—strikes directly at the structural growth story underpinning AppLovin’s premium valuation. The MAX ad network has been the company’s core engine, aggregating in-app supply across mobile gaming to drive revenue. Wittine’s latest findings suggest that engine is running closer to capacity than the Street assumed.
To put Edgewater’s forecast into perspective, AppLovin reported $1.92 billion in revenue last quarter. The company guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $2.055 billion to $2.085 billion, which implies sequential quarter-over-quarter growth of roughly 7% to 8.6%. If AppLovin only manages Wittine’s projected 8% to 9% growth in the fourth quarter, it indicates the company’s sequential growth trajectory is flattening rather than accelerating into the year-end.
The analyst was also notably self-critical regarding Edgewater’s previous rating. The firm had upgraded the stock in May, assuming hybrid and in-app advertising growth would continue to yield incremental supply for MAX.
"Our May upgrade thesis of hybrid/IAA growth yielding more MAX supply takes a meaningful hit in this update, with the pace of expansion slowing vs. the Spring," Wittine acknowledged, noting the firm plans to monitor the trend closely going forward.
Furthermore, the algorithm update AppLovin management highlighted during its second-quarter earnings call offered limited reassurance. Wittine found only "spotty" validation of genuine improvement in August, characterizing the apparent recovery as mostly recouping a decline in July rather than a net advance.
Competition is compounding these headwinds. Wittine flagged Unity (NYSE: U) as an ongoing competitive threat, noting that Unity’s expanding scale is pressuring AppLovin’s net revenue spreads. This dynamic alters the supply-demand balance within mobile ad auctions, and broader margin compression could weigh on the elevated EBITDA multiples AppLovin has historically commanded.
Ultimately, Wittine views this as a necessary reality check ahead of a broader consensus reset.
"This has turned into a show-me story," Wittine explained. He noted that the ongoing reset to sell-side expectations means late-2026 and 2027 consensus estimates will likely move lower before the company’s third-quarter earnings report. However, he views this as a "healthy" adjustment for Street sentiment that had previously dismissed the law of large numbers as irrelevant to AppLovin’s trajectory.
