Georgia Power and Google have announced an agreement under which Google will subscribe to power from nuclear uprates at Plants Vogtle and Hatch in Georgia, with the arrangement projected to generate approximately $900 million in benefits for Georgia Power customers over the life of the units.
The deal, which is subject to approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), would add approximately 96 megawatts of new capacity to the electric grid. Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), filed the agreement with the Georgia PSC on Sept. 21, 2026.
Under the terms, Google will subscribe to a new Nuclear Uprate (NU-1) tariff and receive Zero-Emission Credits representing the carbon-free attributes of the power generated by the uprates. The filings also include a request to approve a new extended power uprate (EPU) for Plant Hatch Units 1 and 2. An EPU for Plant Vogtle Units 1 and 2 was previously approved by the Georgia PSC as part of the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan.
An EPU increases electrical output by modifying plant equipment such as turbines, pumps, motors, and cooling systems, allowing a reactor to operate at a higher licensed thermal power level without changes to the existing reactor fuel design or plant infrastructure.
"We appreciate Google's continued leadership in this space and partnership in developing this program, which we see as the latest example of how large-load growth can benefit all electric customers," said Aaron Mitchell, Senior Vice President of Strategic Growth for Georgia Power.
Lucia Tian, Director of Advanced Energy Technologies at Google, said the collaboration "ensures that digital infrastructure growth goes hand-in-hand with positive local impact, helping to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in direct customer benefits."
Nuclear energy currently accounts for more than 25 percent of Georgia Power's energy production, with Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia serving as a major generation source.
