Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced that GM Defense delivered the first batch of PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor missile housing components just 22 days after a formal contract between the two companies was signed on Aug. 6, with delivery completed on Aug. 28.
The components, which the company said can traditionally take months to years to produce, were manufactured using GM Defense's casting and machining capabilities to meet defense specifications.
Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, called the turnaround a demonstration of the company's focus on execution. "Our partnership with GM Defense is a concrete example of how we're merging world-class commercial manufacturing with defense supply chain and production practices and rapidly translating that into battlefield readiness for the United States," he said.
Stephen duMont, President and CEO of GM Defense, said the partnership draws on "GM's precision-fabrication expertise and ability to manufacture with quality at scale."
According to the press release, Lockheed Martin is investing $8–$9 billion to scale munitions production across more than 20 U.S. sites, adding buildings, expanding facilities, and creating thousands of jobs. The company said production and warehousing space for munitions is expected to increase by nearly 50% following planned expansions.
Both companies said they plan to extend the partnership to additional munitions programs, including THAAD and PrSM, applying commercial manufacturing practices to defense production.
