BlackRock launches customizable target date retirement framework

September 16, 2026 6:30 AM EDT

BlackRock has introduced LifePath Solutions (LPS), a customizable target date investment framework aimed at expanding access to retirement planning tools that have traditionally been available only to large retirement plans.

According to a press release from BlackRock (NYSE: BLK), LPS is built on the company's existing $770 billion LifePath platform and combines plan and participant demographic analysis with investment options spanning public and private markets, guaranteed lifetime income, and both active and index strategies.

The framework works by analyzing a plan sponsor's workforce demographics, industry-specific factors, and plan characteristics to determine a glidepath and risk level. Plan sponsors work with BlackRock advisors and consultants to tailor the solution, which can range from traditional index approaches to allocations that include private market investments and lifetime income options.

"Retirement is entering a new era. As traditional pensions are increasingly scarce and individuals take on greater responsibility for funding retirement, plan sponsors are looking for more effective ways to help American workers achieve better outcomes," said Jaime Magyera, Head of Retirement and U.S. Wealth Advisory at BlackRock.

Nick Nefouse, Global Head of Retirement Solutions and Head of LifePath at BlackRock, said the new offering brings together three decades of lifecycle research with expanded capabilities across active, index, private markets, and guaranteed income.

BlackRock's 2026 Read on Retirement survey, cited in the release, found that projected workplace savings are expected to replace only 50–60% of the retirement income Americans anticipate needing. The survey also found that nearly three-quarters of respondents want access to private markets through their workplace plan, nine in 10 are interested in guaranteed lifetime income, and 81% want more personalized investment guidance.

BlackRock currently manages LifePath retirement solutions across eight countries. The company states LPS brings that experience to individual U.S. plans, allowing workforce-specific characteristics to shape the investment solution while maintaining a standard target date experience for participants.
