Ambarella launches X7 standalone AI accelerator chip

September 15, 2026 9:01 AM EDT

Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA) announced the X7, its first dedicated edge AI accelerator chip, designed to add AI processing capabilities to existing systems built on Arm or x86 host processors without requiring a full platform redesign.

The X7 connects to a host system via a single lane of PCIe Gen 3 or USB 3.2 and operates within a power envelope of 2 to 5 watts. It supports convolutional neural networks, vision transformers, multimodal transformers and hybrid networks using Ambarella's third-generation CVflow architecture, the same engine used in the company's integrated SoCs.

According to the company, X7 is aimed at OEMs and system builders managing existing installed equipment that lacks AI capabilities, as well as teams prototyping AI features ahead of next-generation hardware redesigns. Target markets include retail and physical security, industrial inspection, mobile robots and drones, intelligent transportation, and enterprise edge systems such as kiosks, point-of-sale terminals and on-premise AI appliances.

"Many of our customers' systems in the field were designed before the AI workloads their end users now expect were possible," said Fermi Wang, President and CEO of Ambarella. "X7 brings the same third-generation CVflow engine that runs in more than 50 million of our AI SoCs to platforms our customers have already deployed at scale."

Ambarella also introduced XCalibur, a reference design and development platform for X7 based on a standard 2280 M.2 form factor with LPDDR5 memory and PCIe throughput above 840 MB/s. The company said it intends to make complete XCalibur design files available to customers to facilitate a path from evaluation to production.

X7 is supported by the Cooper Developer Platform, which includes compiler, quantization and profiling tools, along with C++ and Python runtime APIs. The company said models built for its existing SoCs are designed to transfer to X7 without a software rewrite.

Ambarella is distributing X7 through direct sales and via partnerships with Capgemini and Macnica, announced Sept. 3, 2026. X7 is currently sampling, and XCalibur evaluation kits are available to qualified customers.
