GE HealthCare launches AI hospital operations tool with two health systems

September 15, 2026 8:03 AM EDT

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) has announced CareIntellect for Operations, an AI-enabled Software-as-a-Service application designed to help health systems forecast capacity constraints up to 72 hours in advance. The Queen's Health Systems and Duke Health will be the first to implement the application.

The application uses two proprietary AI models. The Pressure Forecast model analyzes historical hospital operations data alongside real-time inputs from electronic medical records and resource management systems to predict potential constraints across hospitals, departments, and units. The Estimated Day of Discharge model analyzes patient data to predict when individual patients are likely to be discharged, with estimates updated hourly.

The tool provides unit-, department-, and enterprise-level views of operational bottlenecks and recommends actions related to discharge, imaging, transfers, and other capacity needs. It runs on Amazon Web Services and is available through GE HealthCare directly or via the AWS Marketplace.

"Managing demand and capacity across our system in a coordinated, predictable way is essential to delivering exceptional care," said Katie Flanagan, Associate Vice President of Patient Flow and Care Coordination at Duke Health. "CareIntellect for Operations builds on three years of partnership with GE HealthCare, giving our teams a three-day view of what's coming so they can move faster from analysis to action."

CareIntellect for Operations is part of GE HealthCare's broader CareIntellect application family, which shares a cloud-first infrastructure. The company said its existing Command Center software, used by nearly 500 hospitals globally, has been associated with outcomes including up to $20 million in first-year cost savings and capacity for 19,000 additional patients annually at select sites, though the company noted results can vary.

According to the press release, GE HealthCare has invested more than $5.1 billion in innovation since 2023.
