Alcon launches Unity M ophthalmic microscope in U.S. and Japan

September 3, 2026 9:01 AM EDT

Alcon (NYSE: ALC) has announced the initial commercial launch of the Unity M, a premium surgical microscope for ophthalmic surgeons, with rollout beginning in the U.S. and Japan, followed by Europe.

The Unity M is the third product added to Alcon's Unity platform, joining the Unity VCS and Unity CS. The device has received regulatory approvals in the U.S., Japan, Canada, India, and Europe, with inventory beginning to ship in September.

The base model includes three core visualization features. The first is a red reflex zone that Alcon claims is up to six times larger than the Zeiss ARTEVO, based on laboratory evaluation. The second is Color Tunable Illumination, which Alcon describes as the first of its kind among ophthalmic surgical microscopes as of May 2026. The third is an optimized depth of field designed to maintain visualization as the eye shifts during surgery.

The microscope uses a modular architecture intended to allow surgeons to add upgrades over time and configure the system for anterior or posterior segment procedures.

"By partnering closely with Eye Care Professionals to understand their most significant unmet needs, we developed Unity M to provide a flexible, future-ready visualization platform that gives surgeons precise control and personalization in the operating room," said Ian Bell, SVP and Chief Operating Officer of Alcon.

Alcon said the Unity M is designed for integration with its broader ecosystem of products and digital services. The company will feature the microscope at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
