AWS and Azure launch private multicloud connectivity service

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure have launched a public preview of direct private connectivity between their cloud platforms, expanding AWS's existing multicloud networking service to include Azure.

The service, called AWS Interconnect – multicloud, now covers all three major non-AWS cloud providers, adding Azure to existing connections with Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. AWS first introduced the service at its re:Invent 2025 conference.

Customers can provision dedicated, private bandwidth between AWS and Azure through the AWS Management Console, CLI, or the Azure portal. AWS says provisioning takes minutes rather than the weeks or months previously required through traditional methods involving physical infrastructure and third-party networking arrangements.

The service includes a quad-redundant architecture across multiple interconnect facilities and routers, which AWS says delivers four-nines availability. MACsec encryption is applied between edge routers to protect data in transit between the two providers' networks.

"Customers told us they wanted a better way to connect workloads spanning AWS and Azure, and the old ways of doing it were clunky," said Robert Kennedy, VP of Network Services at AWS. "With AWS Interconnect-multicloud and Azure Multicloud Interconnect, we're proving what's possible when both sides commit to a high bar: MACsec security out of the box, four-nines availability, and scalability at the click of a button."

Narayan Annamalai, Vice President of Product Management for Azure Networking at Microsoft, said the collaboration is intended to reduce operational complexity for customers building applications across multiple cloud environments.

The service also includes AWS Network Synthetic Monitor at no additional cost, which identifies the source of packet loss across cloud-to-cloud connections.

The preview is currently available in four regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Europe (Frankfurt). AWS said it plans to expand regional availability and bandwidth options based on customer feedback.

AWS published an open API specification for network interoperability that allows additional cloud providers to join the service if they meet the stated security and availability requirements.
