Wrap Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: WRAP) announced an expansion of its relationship with Frenel Imaging Ltd. to integrate laser directed-energy technology into its WrapShield platform, targeting counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) applications for U.S. and NATO markets, according to a company statement.
The directed-energy capability being developed includes three fiber-laser configurations: an approximately 3 kW man-portable system, an approximately 6 kW vehicle-mounted system, and an approximately 9–12 kW fixed-site system. The systems are designed to incorporate Frenel's passive thermal polarimetric detection technology as the sensing and tracking layer, paired with laser effectors developed by a third-party directed-energy manufacturer not identified in the release.
The announcement follows Wrap Technologies' disclosure of a $12.0 million institutional financing on Aug. 19. The company said the laser C-UAS capability is the first technology advanced under an expanded commercial framework with Frenel, under which additional technologies sourced by Frenel may be brought into WrapShield for commercialization.
The company also indicated interest in evaluating the portable 3 kW configuration for tactical law enforcement applications, including standoff breaching and barrier removal, as well as integration onto ground robotic systems.
The press release notes that definitive agreements related to the collaboration have not been executed and that the integration remains in a development phase without completed demonstration or qualification.
"Directed energy flips that equation, but only if you can aim it," said Jared Novick, President and Chief Operating Officer of Wrap Technologies. "Getting both numbers down—the cost of the system and the cost of the shot—is what determines whether this capability remains concentrated at major installations or can scale across borders, forward locations, allied forces and public safety."
Wrap Technologies is headquartered in Miami, Florida.
