Investing.com -- Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN) Prime Video has committed $2 billion to expand its content and sports footprint across Latin America between 2027 and 2030, marking the platform's largest strategic capital allocation in the region to date. Unveiled at a showcase event in Mexico City, the multi-year initiative aims to accelerate regional growth by scaling original productions, securing live sports rights, and extending third-party streaming storefronts across Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile.
As part of the deployment, the company plans to more than double its slate of local original titles by 2030 relative to 2026 levels, anchored by more than 25 new releases scheduled for 2027. Executed through Amazon MGM Studios, the strategy targets a broad spectrum of scripted series, films, and unscripted formats intended to drive regional subscriber retention while offering global crossover potential. The capital commitment also reinforces Prime Video’s live sports momentum, building on viewer engagement that reached over 20 million Latin American households in 2026, already surpassing the platform's total sports audience for all of 2025. Following expanded broadcasting rights for the NBA and domestic soccer in Brazil and Mexico, the service will add 38 home matches for the Mexico National Team over four years beginning in September.
Meanwhile, Amazon is extending its commercial reach by introducing standalone video rentals, purchases, and third-party channel subscriptions into six additional Latin American territories. By allowing consumers in markets like Peru, Guatemala, and Costa Rica to access premium entertainment without requiring a full Prime membership, the company is broadening its addressable market and creating new transactional revenue streams.
To support the elevated output, the investment directs resources toward regional production infrastructure and technical talent development through targeted programs across Brazil and Mexico. Management highlighted these back-end workforce initiatives as essential to establishing a sustainable creative pipeline capable of supporting high-volume, premium production over the long term.
Against that backdrop, the long-term strategic outlay highlights Amazon's intent to capture audience share and deepen monetization outside its mature North American footprint. Investors will likely monitor how effectively this capital deployment translates into sustained subscriber growth, higher advertising yields, and improved regional monetization over the coming forecast period.
