Investing.com -- NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) plans to begin small-batch shipments of a newly tailored artificial intelligence chip to Chinese customers by the end of the year, according to a report from The Information. Shares of the semiconductor giant briefly turned positive following the news before paring gains to trade down 0.5%.
The new offering is a modified variant of Nvidia’s Language Processing Unit (LPU), developed using licensed technology from Groq, that operates alongside primary graphics processors to accelerate AI model response times. Because Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin architecture cannot be exported to China under U.S. rules, engineers modified the LPU’s software to allow the fully compliant hardware to pair with other processors accessible in the country. Several Chinese firms have already placed orders for the device, setting up a direct confrontation with domestic inference hardware such as Huawei Technologies’ upcoming Ascend 950DT. Nevertheless, execution risks remain tied to regulatory approval from Beijing, which has previously restricted foreign silicon to bolster domestic semiconductor champions.
Nvidia’s strategic move targets a critical supply deficit within China’s artificial intelligence sector, where severe computing bottlenecks recently forced Moonshot AI to freeze sign-ups and DeepSeek to raise developer fees. With China’s largest tech conglomerates tying up domestic chip production through 2027, the ongoing shortage provides Nvidia a crucial window to re-engage customers before they permanently transition to local architectures.
The initiative underscores Nvidia’s intent to preserve its Chinese market footprint despite strict Washington export controls and earlier commentary from Chief Executive Jensen Huang that the company had largely conceded the region to Huawei. Beyond the LPU, Nvidia is scaling shipments of its cleared H200 processors, according to the report, with packaging partner Amkor Technology finishing over one million units in the second quarter, while separately developing two lower-power gaming chips tailored for the market.
