VinFast adds EV cost calculator to its U.S. digital sales tools

August 20, 2026 7:01 AM EDT

VinFast (NASDAQ: VFS) has added an interactive energy cost saving calculator to its U.S. digital sales platform, allowing shoppers to estimate and compare ownership costs between its electric vehicles and comparable gas-powered models.

The tool lets users input an ownership period and monthly mileage to generate estimated energy cost comparisons. According to the company, a driver covering roughly 2,000 miles per month in a VF 8 Eco over five years would face estimated energy costs of $7,811, compared with $18,528 for a similar gas-powered SUV — approximately 58% lower.

The move follows research suggesting that presenting full ownership cost information influences consumer vehicle preferences. A study of 3,199 U.S. consumers found that showing five-year fuel savings alone did not shift vehicle preferences, but adding broader ownership cost data increased stated preference for hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. A separate 2026 study of 716 consumers in Vietnamese cities found that fuel and maintenance cost information made buyers 14.3% more likely to choose an EV, with energy cost saving information adding another 4.5%.

A National Bureau of Economic Research study of 1.6 million vehicle purchases found that buyers valued future fuel savings at 15 to 38 cents for every $1 of savings, compared with money spent upfront.

VinFast currently offers the VF 8 and VF 9 electric SUVs in the U.S. market and has been expanding its domestic dealer network.
