Palo Alto Networks launches critical infrastructure AI defense program

Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW) announced the Frontier AI Critical Defense Program on Aug. 19, 2026, an initiative aimed at protecting critical infrastructure from AI-driven cybersecurity exploits through coordinated "virtual patching" at the network level.

The program brings together participants from operational technology, healthcare, commercial software, and open-source communities. New additions to the collaboration include Anthropic, OpenAI, Mitsubishi, Axis Communications, the Analysis and Resilience Center for Systemic Risk, Health-ISAC, the Energy R&D Institute (EPRI), and the Linux Foundation's Akrites initiative. Existing partners include IBM, Red Hat, Microsoft, Siemens, and Idaho National Laboratory.

The program follows research by Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 team, which used frontier AI models to identify more than 14,000 previously unknown vulnerabilities in open-source software. The company said critical infrastructure operators face constraints around uptime and safety testing that prevent them from applying patches at the speed AI-driven threats can emerge, creating an exposure gap.

The program's virtual patching approach is intended to neutralize vulnerabilities at the network layer before software-level fixes are deployed, while keeping vulnerability details from potential attackers.

Lee Klarich, Chief Product Officer at Palo Alto Networks, said in a statement: "In the age of Frontier AI, the traditional, reactive race to build and deploy software patches before adversaries exploit a flaw is a losing battle. Protecting critical infrastructure requires a structural shift from isolated patching to collective, proactive intelligence."
