Lam Research plans $3B R&D expansion over five years

Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ: LRCX) announced plans to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its global research and development lab network, according to a company press release dated Aug. 13, 2026.

The multi-site expansion is expected to add infrastructure and capabilities that would increase experiment capacity by more than 50%. Lam's existing lab network spans the United States, Asia, and Europe, and currently supports more than one million experiments annually.

The company said it plans to begin expanding the network in 2026. The stated goal is to compress product development cycles for customers, from early-stage research to manufacturing deployment.

Tim Archer, president and chief executive officer of Lam Research, said in a statement: "We are investing with the intention of staying ahead of what our customers need, further strengthening our global innovation engine to deliver the next generation of semiconductor breakthroughs."

Lam said its integrated lab network allows tools, data, and expertise to be shared across locations and time zones. The company said recent customer engagements using this approach have enabled it to shorten process development cycles by up to 2.5 times.

Scott DeBoer, executive vice president and chief technology and products officer at Micron Technology, commented on the announcement, noting an ongoing collaboration with Lam on memory, storage, and advanced packaging technologies.

John West, chief analyst for semiconductor equipment at Yole Group, said in the release that AI-related investment is lifting demand for deposition and etch equipment, and that sustaining momentum will require the semiconductor industry to compress development cycles and scale new technologies into manufacturing more quickly.
