Investing.com -- SanDisk (Nasdaq: SNDK) shares rose 12% following the company’s "In Focus" 2026 Investor Day, where leadership outlined a highly optimized financial model, durable customer partnerships, and a leading NAND technology roadmap designed to drive sustainable long-term value in the AI era.
“Our strong performance today is the direct result of disciplined execution against the strategy we outlined 18 months ago,” said David Goeckeler, Chairman and CEO of SanDisk. Goeckeler highlighted the company’s differentiated position built on decades of NAND flash innovation, capital-efficient operations, and a diversified portfolio.
Advancing Innovation in the Age of AI
With the rapid adoption of AI accelerating storage interface transitions, SanDisk is targeting a total available market for enterprise data center flash that is expected to reach 1.2 zettabytes by 2030. To meet these demands, the company introduced a two-dimensional scaling strategy leveraging CMOS directly Bonded to Array (CBA) technology:
BiCS9 QLC: Combining a proven BiCS8 array with a BiCS10-based CMOS wafer, this technology delivers high performance for AI workloads while maintaining manufacturing capital efficiency.
BiCS10 QLC: Setting an industry benchmark, the upcoming BiCS10 QLC node achieves a 60% increase in bit density compared to BiCS8, maximizing performance and power efficiency.
HBF™ (High Bandwidth Flash): Gaining momentum as a compelling solution for the era of AI inference, supported by a growing industry ecosystem.
Sustainable Financial Model (FY2028 – FY2030)
SanDisk introduced a comprehensive multi-year financial framework, optimizing for growth, sustainability, and shareholder returns. Luis Visoso, Chief Financial Officer, detailed the targets for fiscal years 2028 through 2030:
Revenue Growth: Expected in the mid-to-high teens, aligning with bit growth.
Margins: Projected non-GAAP gross margins of approximately 80% and non-GAAP operating margins near 75%.
Cash Flow & Returns: With operating expenses modeled at around 5% of revenue, the company anticipates an adjusted free cash flow margin of approximately 50%. SanDisk notably committed to returning 100 percent of excess cash to shareholders after reinvesting in the business.
This financial stability is underpinned by the company’s New Business Model (NBM) agreements, which include committed volumes and minimum financial guarantees. SanDisk has signed NBMs with eight customers, accounting for about 50% of bits in FY2027 and approximately two-thirds of bits in FY2028.
Analyst Insight: Clearing the Air on Bit Growth
The presentation helped assuage recent investor concerns that had led to a sell-off following last week’s earnings call. The previous drop was partly due to an FY2027 outlook indicating that output bit volume growth (mid-teens) would be below the input bit volume growth (mid-to-high teens).
According to notes from KC Rajkumar at Lynx Equity Strategies, CEO David Goeckeler provided crucial clarification on this dynamic during his introductory comments:
Bit Growth Available for Sale: Goeckeler clarified that while the long-term target for input bit volume growth is in the mid-to-high teens, bits available for sale will vary to optimize profitability. Crucially, there will be periods where output bit growth could exceed the mid-to-high teens, a point Rajkumar highlighted as a positive takeaway for investors.
Productivity Across Tech Nodes: With an average bit growth of 54% for every change in NAND technology, SanDisk possesses a highly efficient technology map. To prevent flooding the market with bits, SanDisk will selectively reduce wafer output during technology node transitions. Rajkumar noted that this strategy is vital, as it allows the company to maintain profitability while driving up capital efficiency.
