Blue Energy and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) have signed an agreement to advance the next phase of a collaboration to develop a 2.5 gigawatt gas-and-nuclear power plant in Victoria, Texas, according to a press release from GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV).
The agreement covers engineering design, licensing, and safety analysis for the project, which is subject to a final investment decision in 2027. The plant would combine GE Vernova 7HA.02 gas turbines with GVH BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs).
Under the current plan, Blue Energy intends to supply approximately 1 gigawatt of power to a nearby data center using two GE Vernova gas turbines starting in 2030, followed by an additional 1.5 gigawatts from up to five BWRX-300 SMRs beginning in 2032.
Blue Energy CEO Jake Jurewicz said the agreement allows the company to "confidently move forward to build our nuclear energy production line." Eric Gray, CEO of GE Vernova's Power segment, said the collaboration "combines GE Vernova's flagship HA gas turbine technology with GE Vernova Hitachi's advanced nuclear SMR technology."
The first BWRX-300 unit is currently under construction at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington site in Canada, with completion expected by the end of the decade.
