NextEra Energy secures $3.3B in funding for 10 GW gas projects

August 12, 2026 4:17 PM EDT

NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE) has executed definitive agreements with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of Japan to fund the development and operation of up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas-powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania, the company announced Aug. 12.

The agreements release an initial $3.3 billion tranche of funding, which will be used for development activities including down payments on long-lead equipment such as turbines and the selection of engineering, procurement and construction contractors.

The projects were selected in connection with Japan's $550 billion investment commitment to the United States under the U.S.-Japan trade agreement, which President Donald J. Trump approved in March.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said the initial investment "will commence the building of the facilities needed to bring up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas power to Texas and Pennsylvania communities."

The Pennsylvania project, referred to as the South Mon project, carries a total value of $17 billion and will deliver 4.3 gigawatts of natural gas generation, according to a statement from U.S. Senator Dave McCormick.

NextEra Energy Chairman, President and CEO John Ketchum described the Texas and Pennsylvania projects as two of more than 30 energy hubs in various stages of development in the company's portfolio.

The projects are designed to pair new generating resources with new electricity demand, consistent with the White House's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, which NextEra Energy signed in July. The company said large-load customers will be required to pay their share of costs, keeping expenses off existing residential and commercial ratepayers.

Initial resources are expected to come online as early as the end of 2028, with full project completion targeted for 2032. The projects remain subject to permitting and regulatory approvals. NextEra Energy said it will share additional project details, including configurations and timelines, as development progresses.
