August 12, 2026 8:01 AM EDT

Acurx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACXP) announced that the Japan Patent Office and the Mexico Patent Office have each granted a new patent covering the company's DNA Polymerase IIIC inhibitors, including compositions-of-matter, methods of use, and pharmaceutical compositions.

According to a press release, Acurx has now secured six U.S. patents and ten patents internationally, covering countries including Australia, Canada, Europe, Israel, India, Japan, Korea, and Mexico. The patents protect key aspects of the company's ibezapolstat compound and its ACX-375C program targeting DNA Polymerase IIIC. Additional country-level patent applications remain under review.

David P. Luci, President and Chief Executive Officer of Acurx, said: "Achieving these additional new patents extend our patent estate protection as we further develop ibezapolstat and our innovative, AI-supported drug discovery platform."

Acurx describes ibezapolstat as its lead product candidate for the treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection. The company states the drug is Phase 3 ready, pending appropriate financing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration provided guidance at a July 13, 2026 Type C Meeting indicating it is open to discussion on the potential for an NDA submission based on a single Phase 3 trial. The FDA also agreed that a successful outcome from the IBZ-ASPIRE Phase 3 trial, supported by the open-label IBZ-PATHFINDER Phase 2 trial, may allow NDA filing for both treatment of acute CDI and reduction of recurrence. Patient enrollment for the IBZ-PATHFINDER trial is expected to begin within the next few months.
