IDEXX launches point-of-care cardiac test for cats and dogs

August 11, 2026 7:01 AM EDT

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDXX) announced the launch of the Catalyst proBNP Test, which the company claims is the first dual-species, in-clinic test for NT-proBNP, a biomarker used to evaluate heart disease in cats and dogs.

The test will be available on the Catalyst platform, which has a global installed base of nearly 80,000 analyzers, beginning in North America in October 2026, with international availability to follow.

NT-proBNP is used to screen, diagnose, and monitor cardiac disease in companion animals. According to published veterinary guidelines cited in the press release, heart disease affects approximately one in six cats and one in 10 dogs. IDEXX estimates the global cardiac testing market opportunity at approximately $4 billion, based on internal analysis conducted in February 2026.

The test is designed to run alongside other chemistry tests on the Catalyst analyzer and deliver results during a patient visit. Results are integrated into IDEXX's VetConnect Plus platform, where they appear alongside a patient's diagnostic history.

"For many veterinarians, cardiac evaluation has often involved delays, added costs, or immediate referrals," said Mike Erickson, President and Chief Executive Officer of IDEXX. "With Catalyst proBNP, veterinarians get clear, quantitative results in minutes, not days, so they can make informed decisions earlier."

Sonya Gordon, a cardiology professor at Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science, said the test brings objective cardiac biomarker information closer to the patient. Gordon disclosed that she has received compensation from IDEXX for consulting services.

The Catalyst proBNP Test is the latest addition to IDEXX's cardiac health portfolio, which also includes reference laboratory services, electrocardiograms, advanced imaging, and AI-assisted tools, according to the company.
