ArrowXL cuts fleet mileage 13% using Descartes route planning tool

ArrowXL by JP Home, a U.K.-based two-person home delivery and warehousing company, has reduced its fleet mileage by approximately 13% after adopting route planning software from Descartes Systems Group (Nasdaq: DSGX), according to a statement from Descartes.

ArrowXL, which handles deliveries of large household items such as washing machines and refrigerators, said the Descartes fleet performance management solution now plans 95% of its delivery routes overnight. The company said early route terminations dropped from 5% to 1%, and deliveries outside customers' preferred time windows decreased by 4%.

"We outgrew our previous planning technology as the outputs it provided no longer gave us logical, valuable delivery insights to support growth," said Rachel Hopkins, Chief Information Officer at ArrowXL. "Descartes changed this. The solution now plans 95% of our team's delivery routes overnight and, by decreasing our dependence on manual processes, we've reduced mileage by 13%."

ArrowXL said the shift away from manual planning processes contributed to lower operating costs and reduced emissions, as well as improvements in first-attempt delivery success rates, revenue per route, and vehicle lifespan.

James Wee, General Manager of Fleet Performance Management at Descartes, said the company's technology supports delivery operations as they scale. "As delivery operations expand, manual planning processes and disconnected tools quickly become limitations," Wee said.

ArrowXL serves 100% of the U.K. mainland population and delivers to 98% of U.K. postcodes six days a week. The company handles more than 7,000 deliveries daily and operates hubs across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with services also available in the Republic of Ireland.
