Chemours adds two low-GWP refrigerants for chiller applications

August 10, 2026 6:45 AM EDT

The Chemours Company (NYSE: CC) announced the launch of two refrigerants, Opteon ZE (R-1234ze(E)) and Opteon 515B (R-515B), designed for stationary chiller applications in data centers and commercial buildings, according to a company press release.

Opteon ZE is a hydrofluoroolefin-based refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) of approximately 1 (AR5) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). It carries an ASHRAE A2L classification, indicating mild flammability, and is compatible with polyolester oil lubricants. The product is suited for air- and water-cooled chillers, commercial air conditioning, heat pumps, and data center cooling.

Opteon 515B is a refrigerant blend composed of approximately 91.1% R-1234ze(E) and 8.9% R-227ea, with a GWP of approximately 293 (AR4) and zero ODP. It carries an ASHRAE A1 classification, meaning no flame propagation, and is positioned for customers transitioning from higher-GWP refrigerants in conventional chiller applications.

"AI is reshaping the demands placed on cooling infrastructure, and customers need solutions that can keep pace without compromising efficiency, reliability, or long-term regulatory readiness," said Joseph Martinko, President of Thermal & Specialized Solutions at Chemours.

Both products are available in select markets, with broader availability expected to follow. Chemours is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, and operates approximately 28 manufacturing sites serving around 2,400 customers in roughly 110 countries.
