Aetna adds coverage for Sight Sciences glaucoma surgical systems

Aetna, Inc. has updated its Glaucoma Surgery Policy to recognize Sight Sciences, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: SGHT) OMNI Surgical System and SION Surgical Instrument as medically necessary for the treatment of mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma, when specified clinical criteria are met.

The policy covers ab interno canaloplasty procedures, such as those enabled by the OMNI system, and adult goniotomy procedures, such as those performed with the SION instrument. The coverage is retroactive to July 14, 2026. Aetna covers approximately 25 million total commercial lives in the United States.

Paul Badawi, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sight Sciences, said the update establishes broad payer access for canaloplasty and goniotomy procedures across all major national payers. "With this coverage milestone, broad payer access has been established for canaloplasty and goniotomy enabled by the OMNI Surgical System and SION Surgical Instrument across all major national payers," Badawi said.

The OMNI Surgical System and SION Surgical Instrument are implant-free, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery technologies. The OMNI system is indicated in the United States to reduce intraocular pressure in adult patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. The SION instrument is a bladeless, manually operated device used to excise trabecular meshwork during ophthalmic surgical procedures.
