IBM and Red Hat to offer Lightwell free to universities and NGOs

August 4, 2026 9:02 AM EDT

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Red Hat announced a program to provide their Lightwell open source security tool at no charge to more than 185 research universities and 100 nongovernmental organizations and think tanks in the United States, with onboarding set to begin in August 2026.

Lightwell uses AI-driven automation combined with human engineering expertise to identify, validate and remediate vulnerabilities in open source software. The tool delivers digitally signed fixes for software versions institutions already run, reducing the need for upgrades. It operates within an institution's existing environment without requiring access to proprietary source code, data or research.

Eligible institutions will receive access to a library of more than 8,000 validated and remediated open source package versions, including fixes for 64 previously undisclosed vulnerabilities. That library has grown from 6,500 package versions since Lightwell launched in May 2026, when IBM and Red Hat committed $5 billion and deployed more than 20,000 engineers to the initiative.

Red Hat President and CEO Matt Hicks said in a statement: "Lightwell combines automated remediation with deep open source engineering expertise and contributes fixes back upstream. Expanding access will help strengthen both participating institutions and the open source communities on which they depend."

Participating institutions will also receive source code, compliance artifacts and Software Bills of Materials. Red Hat's upstream model submits fixes to originating open source communities for review and acceptance.

The program extends Lightwell beyond its existing base of financial institution partners, which includes Bank of America, BNY, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JPMorganChase, Mastercard, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Canada, State Street, Visa and Wells Fargo. A technology ecosystem that includes Amazon Web Services, AMD, GitLab, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, Palo Alto Networks and ServiceNow is also collaborating on the initiative.
