NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI) announced that its Trimension NCJ29D6 ultra-wideband chip family will be deployed across BMW Group's fleet, beginning with selected 2026 vehicle programs.
According to a company press release, the Trimension NCJ29D6 is a single-chip solution that combines secure fine-ranging and short-range radar capabilities. BMW Group will use the technology to support two primary applications: Digital Key Plus, which allows drivers to lock and unlock vehicles hands-free using a smartphone or smartwatch, and in-cabin presence detection.
The presence detection function uses ultra-wideband radar to identify subtle motion patterns that may indicate a person or animal has been left inside a parked vehicle. The system sends a warning message to vehicle users when potential occupant presence is detected. NXP states the technology is designed to address potentially emerging regulatory requirements and future NCAP safety protocols in Europe and China.
Markus Staeblein, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Secure Car Access at NXP Semiconductors, said the platform is intended to support additional features beyond digital key and presence detection, including kick sensing, intrusion alert, and automatic charging.
NXP reported revenue of $12.27 billion in 2025 and operates in more than 30 countries.
