FAA certifies Boeing 737 MAX-7 after nearly a decade of review

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the Boeing (NYSE: BA) 737 MAX-7, authorizing the aircraft's production following what the agency described as almost a decade of extensive review.

The approval required Boeing to incorporate several design changes, including updates to flight-control software, the flightcrew alerting system, and a redesigned engine anti-ice system. The FAA said these modifications address requirements under the Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act and recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board.

According to the FAA, the engine anti-ice system redesign is intended to prevent the engine inlet from overheating and potentially weakening surrounding structure, while the alerting system updates are meant to provide pilots with clearer information and warnings.

The amended type certificate confirms the aircraft meets all applicable design and safety requirements. The updated Production Limitation Record authorizes Boeing to begin production of the aircraft.

FAA safety inspectors will remain on site at Boeing production facilities to monitor the manufacturing process, including observing Boeing's Safety Management System and safety culture.
