Amazon deepens AI investments with billions in Anthropic and OpenAI

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) disclosed several significant investments in artificial intelligence companies during the second quarter of 2026, according to a regulatory filing.
Amazon invested $10 billion in Anthropic nonvoting preferred stock in Q2 2026, and an additional $1.3 billion in convertible notes from Anthropic during the same period. The company also entered a financing facility to make available to Anthropic up to $20 billion, which will expire 30 months after an Anthropic IPO.
Separately, Amazon invested $13.7 billion in OpenAI's Series C preferred stock in Q2 2026. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, total investments in OpenAI's Series C preferred stock reached $28.7 billion.
The filing also noted that Amazon received approximately $640 million in tariff refunds under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act during Q2 2026.
