Science Corp. hires Butterfly Network co-founder as engineering chief

Science Corporation, a brain-computer interface company based in Alameda, Calif., has appointed Nevada Sanchez as Executive Vice President of Engineering. Sanchez will report directly to CEO and co-founder Max Hodak.

Sanchez co-founded Butterfly Network, Inc. (NYSE: BFLY) in 2011 and most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer there. At Butterfly, he led the development of what the company describes as the first ultrasound system on a chip, scaling the technology from a prototype to a commercially deployed medical imaging platform.

The hire follows Science's $230 million Series C capital raise and coincides with the European commercial launch of its PRIMA retinal implant, a brain-computer interface device that received a CE mark under the European Union Medical Device Regulation from DEKRA, authorizing its sale across 30 European countries. An FDA review process is also underway.

Science states that PRIMA is the only treatment to have restored form vision in clinical trial patients blinded by late-stage macular degeneration. Trial results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The company is also developing a Biohybrid neural interface, a Vessel organ perfusion program, and expanding its Science Foundry manufacturing capabilities.

Sanchez holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Mathematics from MIT, along with a master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the same institution.
