SMBC Aviation Capital has placed an order for 100 Boeing (NYSE: BA) 737 MAX aircraft, comprising 60 737-10 and 40 737-8 jets, the companies announced at the Farnborough Airshow on July 20, 2026.
The order includes SMBC Aviation Capital's first-ever purchase of the 737-10 variant, which Boeing describes as the highest-capacity member of the 737 MAX family, seating up to 230 passengers with a range of 3,100 nautical miles. The 60-unit 737-10 portion is described as the single largest order for that variant by a lessor.
With the new order, SMBC Aviation Capital's owned, managed, and committed portfolio for the 737 MAX family reaches 450 jets.
"This transaction represents a significant milestone for SMBC Aviation Capital and will ensure our airline customers have access to a long-term pipeline of new technology aircraft," said Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital.
Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the commitment "reflects the strong demand we are seeing for the 737 MAX family's efficiency, reliability and versatility."
SMBC Aviation Capital services a fleet of 1,700 aircraft with more than 170 airlines globally and is backed by shareholders Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Sumitomo Corporation. The company holds an A- rating from S&P and BBB+ from Fitch.
According to the press release, lessors have ordered more than 1,450 737 MAX jets in total, representing 20% of the aircraft's overall backlog.
