Meta Platforms is breaking ground on its first data center in Canada, a 1-gigawatt facility in Sturgeon County, Alberta, representing an investment of more than CAD $13 billion (approximately USD $10 billion).

The data center, which will be the 33rd in Meta's global network, is designed to support AI workloads. At peak construction, the project is expected to employ approximately 3,000 workers, with more than 300 permanent operational jobs upon completion.

Meta said it will invest approximately CAD $60 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems, and will launch a community grants program providing funding to local nonprofits in the Sturgeon County area.

The company said it worked with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to plan energy supply for the facility. Meta stated it will fully fund new generation and grid infrastructure in Alberta to support the data center's energy needs, and that electricity use will be matched with 100% clean and renewable energy.

The facility is planned to use a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system with dry cooling, which Meta said will result in no operational water use in the cooling system. Water use at the site will be limited to domestic uses, fire protection, and equipment maintenance.

The announcement was made July 8, 2026, according to a company statement.
