VIAVI launches Ultra Ethernet Transport validation tool for AI networks

VIAVI Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) announced the launch of what it claims is the first Ultra Ethernet Transport (UET) validation solution for AI fabrics, according to a company statement released June 23.

The solution is an addition to the VIAVI TestCenter platform and is designed to validate scale-out and scale-up AI back-end networks using the Ultra Ethernet Consortium's (UEC) Ultra Ethernet Stack. The offering operates without dedicated GPU infrastructure, instead emulating the transport layer of UET to replicate AI traffic patterns at scale.

The solution supports emulation of features including reliable ordered and unordered delivery, packet trimming, congestion control, and dynamic multipathing. It also covers collective communications and large language model traffic flows, as well as load-balancing mechanisms such as ECMP, packet spraying, and flowlet switching.

"AI clusters will soon scale to millions of endpoints, which means relying on physical GPUs alone to validate network behavior is no longer practical," said Aniket Khosla, Vice President of Product Management, Optical Transport and High-Speed Ethernet, VIAVI.

HPE also commented on the launch. "The VIAVI TestCenter platform provides realistic traffic emulation and the granular visibility needed to validate congestion control and transport performance at scale," said Mahesh Subramaniam, Senior Director of Product Management, AI Data Centers, HPE. Subramaniam noted that HPE and VIAVI have collaborated on UET transport validation using the Juniper QFX5240 platform and Junos Evolved.

The UEC's 1.0 specification introduced the UET protocol, which targets large-scale AI and high-performance computing workloads with advanced congestion control and multi-vendor Ethernet support.
