Bread Financial Holdings Inc. (NYSE: BFH) reported improved credit performance for May 2026, with net principal loss rates declining compared to the same period last year, according to a company statement.
The Columbus, Ohio-based financial services company recorded a net principal loss rate of 6.98% for May 2026, down from 7.97% in May 2025. Net principal losses totaled $108 million in May 2026, compared to $120 million in the prior year period.
The company's delinquency rate also improved, falling to 5.24% as of May 31, 2026, from 5.71% a year earlier. Total 30-day-plus delinquencies decreased to $853 million from $926 million in the comparable period.
Credit card and other loans reached $18.36 billion at the end of May 2026, representing a 2.6% year-over-year increase from $17.70 billion in May 2025. Average loans for the month totaled $18.17 billion compared to $17.71 billion in the prior year.
The company noted that hurricanes Helene and Milton in late 2024 affected its loss metrics. Bread Financial froze delinquency progression for cardholders in Federal Emergency Management Agency impact zones during the fourth quarter of 2024, which resulted in lower losses that quarter but higher losses in the second quarter of 2025.
Bread Financial provides payment, lending and saving solutions through co-brand and private label credit cards for retailers in various sectors including travel, apparel, and electronics.
