NEXGEL hydrogel patch reduces laser plume by 95.6% in hair removal study

May 19, 2026 9:01 AM EDT

NEXGEL Inc. (NASDAQ: NXGL) reported results from a clinical study showing its hydrogel patch reduced laser plume concentration by 95.6% during laser hair removal procedures compared to a control group.

The randomized, single-center study involved 30 patients and was conducted at the Florida Clinical Research Center by plastic surgeons Dr. Barry DiBernardo and Dr. Jason Pozner. The study was funded by Innovative Optics, a supplier of safety products for healthcare facilities.

The intervention site demonstrated a 37.2% mean reduction in hair density at 90 days post-treatment versus 26.7% on the control side. Mean pain scores were lower on the intervention side at 3.5 compared to 5.1 on the control side. No adverse events were reported during the study.

The study addressed health hazards associated with laser hair removal, specifically the release of airborne particles and organic compounds known as "plume" when hair is vaporized by lasers. These particles may affect the short- and long-term health of medical professionals if inhaled.

The research was published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine in March 2026. The study was designed as an Institutional Review Board clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the hydrogel laser treatment patch.

NEXGEL, based in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, develops and manufactures electron-beam, cross-linked hydrogels for medical and consumer applications. The company's brands include Silverseal, Hexagels, Turfguard, Kenkoderm, and Dermablock.
