Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL) announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities into its patient portal, allowing users to receive plain-language explanations of medical information and ask questions about their health records.
The AI-powered features, expected to launch in 2026, will enable patients to ask questions such as "What does this abbreviation mean?" or "What was the result of my latest cholesterol test?" The system will provide context-aware answers to help patients understand diagnoses, test results, and treatment options, according to the company's announcement at the Oracle Health and Life Sciences Summit.
The new capabilities build on Oracle's recently released AI-enabled electronic health record system. The patient portal features will be powered by OpenAI's technology, though Oracle stated that no personal medical data will be stored by OpenAI.
"With advanced conversational AI embedded across a patient's comprehensive medical record, people can be more proactive in managing their care by asking questions and gaining a deeper understanding of their health," said Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences.
The AI system will explain complex medical results, simplify terminology, help patients prepare for doctor visits, assist in drafting messages to clinicians, and provide appointment scheduling options. The system will not generate diagnoses, medication recommendations, or treatment advice, focusing instead on explaining existing information.
AI-generated text will be visually highlighted and include source citations for clarity. The features are planned for general availability in 2026, with timing dependent on regulatory approvals in applicable jurisdictions.
