FRANKFURT/BERLIN (Reuters) - Upward pressure from wages means inflation is proving stubborn, Germany's central bank said on Friday, a day after the European Central Bank delivered its first interest rate cut since 2019.

Germany needs 75,000 extra troops as NATO braces for Russia threat, reports Spiegel Jun 7, 2024 07:03AM

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will need at least 75,000 additional troops to fulfil its NATO commitments as the alliance adapts its defence planning to face what it sees as an increasingly hostile Russia, Spiegel magazine reported on Friday.

At their Vilnius summit last year, NATO leaders signed off on the first major defence plans since the end of the Cold War, detailing how the alliance would respond to a Russian attack.

China strongly opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urges withdrawal Jun 7, 2024 06:56AM

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is strongly opposed to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and urges Washington to withdraw them immediately, the defence ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said it had lodged a complaint to the United States over the matter.

"(China's military) will continue to strengthen its military training and exercises, and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," it added in a statement.
