Smartphones, 4G Seeing Biggest Growth in 2010

Cell phones are kind of a big deal...and they're becoming an even bigger deal, according to data from iSuppli.

The researcher is expecting sales in the mobile industry worldwide to reach $235.5 billion this year, and soar to over $270 billion in FY11.

iSuppli is forecasting revs as much as $359.3 billion by 2014.

This years number is a 7.9% jump from $218.2 billion in mobile revs realized in 2009.

Items included in the sales are ell phones, cordless phones, battery chargers, mobile infrastructure, mobile and fixed broadband access devices and wireless LAN equipment, amongst other devices and accessories.

Most of the gains for 2010 will be in the 3G segment. 4G, which is just starting to gain traction, only saw revs of $11 million in 2009, which will jump to about $1.3 billion for 2010. iSuppli sees 3G as the dominate technology through 2014.

Through the mobile handset segment, smartphones are the dominate device, with sales projected to increased 40.6% in 2010, versus growth of just 12% in 2009.

Cell phone shipments in 2010 are expected to increase 11.7%, from 1.15 billion units in 2009 to 1.29 billion units.

iSuppli notes that the projections do not take into account the presence of gray-market handsets, especially popular in China, which will contribute $8.9 billion worth of revenue to the industry for 2010.

Major carriers to watch on the news include: Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) and Sprint (NYSE: S), with Sprint making serious headway in the 4G market, and Verizon beginning to tap into 4G. AT&T (NYSE: T) also is making a move to expand their wares into 4G. Additionally, Clearwire (Nasdaq: CLWR) and DragonWave (Nasdaq: DRWI) are suppliers of 4G equipment that carriers need to build out their networks.

In terms of devices, Apple, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) are big players in the world market, with Nokia (NYSE: NOK) currently being the biggest. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is entering the game, again, with their latest Windows Phone 7 selling 1.5 million units in the first several weeks that those devices HTC will see benefit from unit sales, which may even lead to the company going public eventually.

Also think about the cell phone tower operators like American Tower Corp. (NYSE: AMT), Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) and SBA Communications Corp. (Nasdaq: SBAC)

This is, by all means, not a complete list of companies that will be affected by increased global mobile revenues.
