Rumors of a Google (GOOG) Tablet... Is Anyone Surprised?

To the surprise of no one, Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is coming after Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) again as a report from the New York Times suggests that the search engine giant is planning a tablet device that could rival the new iPad.
If any company can rival what Apple is capable of in the tablet marketplace, it will be Google; the two companies are already competing directly in the smart phone market and in the running tally of which company can offer the most must-have applications for its products.
The potential Google tablet would run on the popular Android operating system that has made the company a real threat to Apple in the mobile phone market. Sources have suggested that the device would also be an e-reader that would function like a computer.
According to the report in the Times, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told friends recently at a party that the company was working on such a project, while another source said that the company has been experimenting in “stealth mode” on the development and is in talks with publishers about content for the device.
Apple's iPad has seen early success: about 450,000 units were sold as of last Thursday, just five days since the product’s release. The new device has opened the door for a number of pending "iPad killers" to come.
Some of the companies working on a competing product also include Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ), Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK).
