For players in the mobile phone segment, China has never become more important.
According to the latest data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the country had 1.196 billion mobile subs through the end of August 2013. That's a 0.9 percent gain from July 2013 and 11.5 percent rise over the same period in the prior year.
Of the total, about 351.29 million users in China were 3G subscribers and 827.79 million were mobile Internet-access users.
Total mobile subs made up 87.1 percent of China's population, the MIIT noted.
China subs sent a total of 77.5 billion text messages and Internet traffic usage totaled 117,584-terabytes for all users.
Numbers are important for companies like Apple, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Samsung, ZTE, Mozilla (and its FireFox OS), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), and other major and minor handset and OS providers. Much chatter has surrounded Apple and its potential relationship with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL), the world's largest mobile carrier. Apple's iPhone and iPad are already available via China Telecom (NYSE: CHA) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU), but China Mobile's 700 million-plus subscriber base presents a juicy opportunity.
Shares of Apple, Microsoft, and others are up on Thursday's session.
