Sony (NYSE: SNE) is up on the session on a few news bits today.
First, speculation surrounded whether or not it would spin-off its entertainment unit, as proposed by Third Point's Dan Loeb last week.
Additionally, it's likely that Sony is going to win big on two fronts in the gaming industry. It already has a huge fan base for its PlayStation gaming system, with the next-generation console already in many gamers cross hair. Also, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) today said it would be including a Blu-ray drive on the next version of its Xbox.
The Xbox One will be the successor to the Xbox 360, arguably the most-popular gaming system of all time. With millions being sold equipped with Sony technology, the company is likely to see stronger sales of Blu-ray-specific media.
Shares pared some earlier gains, but the stock is still up 9 percent Tuesday.
