IBM (IBM) Remains Patent Colossus for 20th Straight Year (PC) (MSFT)

International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) is patent-producing machine.

According to new data from IBI CLAIMS Patent Services, IBM tops its list of patent asignees for the twentieth-straight year. IBM received 6,478 utility patents in 2012, up five percent over the previous year.

Coming in second was South Korea-based Samsung with 5,081, Canon (NYSE: CAJ) at 3,174.

Sony (NYSE: SNE), Panasonic (NYSE: PC), and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) rounded out the top six spots. IFI noted that General Electric (NYSE: GE) edged back into the top 10 ranking, coming in ninth place for the year.

According to IFI, the USPTO issued 253,155 utility patents in 2012, the highest annual number on record and an increase of approximately 13 percent over 2011. All but nine companies in the top 50 saw an increase in patent production over last year. Among the gainers, 32 saw double-digit or better growth, a showing that demonstrates just how important the race for patent accumulation has become.
