(Reuters) -Shares of U.S. retailers slid on Tuesday after a forecast cut from industry bellwether Walmart Inc stoked fears of a broader slowdown in spending as high inflation raises costs for consumers.
Walmart shares tumbled over 8%, while shares of Amazon and Target were both down more than 4%. The S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector dropped 2.8%, logging the biggest drop among the sectors in the benchmark S&P 500, which was off about 1%.
Walmart's forecast marked the latest worrisome sign about an economy that some investors fear is headed for a recession.
