(Reuters) - Lowe's Cos Inc (NYSE: LOW) followed larger rival Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD) in reporting better-than-expected quarterly sales as strength in the U.S. housing market and favorable weather powered demand for building and home renovation products.
Shares of the home improvement chain, which also raised its profit forecast for the year ending Feb. 3, rose as much as 4 percent to a record high of $79.08, boosting the company's market value by about $2.5 billion.

(Reuters) - Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD) boosted its sales and profit forecasts for the year on Tuesday after a stronger-than-expected first quarter, driven by a healthy housing market and favorable weather that encouraged Americans to spruce up their homes.
The company's results stood in stark contrast to grim quarterly reports from retailers such as Macy's Inc (NYSE: M), which have been hit as consumers shift spending away from apparel and accessories to big-ticket items including cars and homes.

(Reuters) - Wall Street sold off on Tuesday as investors boosted their bets on the Federal Reserve raising rates later this year, while Home Depot dragged on indexes following its quarterly report.
U.S. consumer prices recorded their biggest increase in more than three years in April as gasoline and rents rose. The data pointed to a steady inflation build-up that could give the Fed ammunition to raise interest rates later this year.
