Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is looking to increase tablet shipments in multiples during 2014.
According to Digitimes, Microsoft's internal projections call for shipments of 25 million tablet units this year, up from shipments of just five million units in 2013. Sources said that the projection seems ambitious and a range of 18 to 20 million units is more likely.
Projections include Microsoft's own Surface tablet. The company is looking to incentivize OEMs to create tablets using the Windows platform, though specifics weren't speculated. Companies like Sony and Lenovo are less interested in developing Windows-based tablets, but ASUStek and Acer have been looking to work with Microsoft. ASUStek aims to ship 12 million tablets in 2014, with around four million being Windows-based devices. Acer hopes for shipments of 10 million units, two million being Windows tablets.
Other device makers mulling inclusion of Windows into upcoming tablets include venerable names like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell, and Toshiba.
Surface shipments should rise from three million to six million units in 2014, Microsoft speculates.
Shares of the software giant are positive in early trading.
