Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) has seen pressure today amid market chatter that the company might not meet its tablet chip shipment goal next year.
Digitimes cited sources Tuesday in saying that Intel is expected to ship just 30 million chips for tablets in 2014. The amount accounts for about 10 percent of expected globa shipments next year and is below the company's own expectation of 40 million chip shipments. Tablet chip shipments for Intel are expected to hit 10 million in 2013.
Sources said the miss could be largely attributed to Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8.1 and Intel Bay Trail-T-based tablets. Tablets using the Bay Trail-T and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android will debut at the end of December 2013 and into January 2014.
There are a limited number of Intel + Android tablets on the market given that most companies adopt ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) architecture, with chips from Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), Rockchip, MediaTek, and others.
Shares of Intel are down over 5 percent.
