Microsoft (MSFT) Gets Another Big App onto WP8 Platform (NOK) (FB)

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 platform and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) scored a win today.

The official Windows Phone store is now carrying the Instagram app.

While chatter that the app would make its way onto windows phone has been ongoing, the actual event means that WP8 is becoming that much bigger of a player in the smartphone segment. With Windows 8.1 recently be released to fix many user complaints, getting more apps on its mobile platform will be key to attracting more users.

Along with the release of the Xbox One on Friday and a potential successor for CEO Steve Ballmer potentially being announced next month, November and the overall holiday shopping season might shape up to be a big one. It puts a whole new spin on the term Movember.

Shares of Microsoft are up 0.9 percent Wednesday afternoon. Instagram was purchased by Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) in 2012 for a tidy sum of $1 billion.
