Verizon and Ericsson complete pre-standard 6G outdoor field test

October 15, 2026 8:04 AM EDT

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) announced they have completed what they claim is the first pre-standard 6G field call in the 7 GHz band, conducted at a Verizon commercial network site in Concord, California.

The test used Ericsson's 6G proof-of-concept equipment installed at the site, with a base station in a site shelter and user equipment housed in a mobile enclosure roughly 12 by 8 feet in size. The enclosure includes varied wall and window materials to allow testing of indoor coverage and uses a pre-standard 6G stack with a 400 MHz carrier.

Testing evaluated coverage, throughput, latency, stability and feature behavior under conditions including line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight paths, foliage, obstacles and signal penetration through different glass and building materials.

Yago Tenorio, Chief Technology Officer and SVP of Technology Development at Verizon, said the milestone "demonstrates how close industry collaboration helps us generate the key technical insights needed to shape global standards and understand how future 6G networks could be designed, deployed and experienced."

The companies noted the test is a pre-standard proof-of-concept and does not represent a commercial 6G service launch. Pre-standard 6G refers to early-stage development that takes place before official standards are finalized. Verizon and Ericsson said they will continue analyzing field results and applying findings to future 6G research and deployment planning.
