NuScale adopts AI tools from Nuclearn and NPX for reactor program

NuScale Power Corporation (NYSE: SMR) announced it is deploying nuclear-specific artificial intelligence tools developed by Nuclearn and NPX to support engineering and knowledge-management functions for its small modular reactor (SMR) program.

According to a press release, the initiative combines Nuclearn's AtomAssist AI platform with NPX's nuclear project implementation experience. An initial proof of concept showed the AI tools could reduce the time required to find relevant engineering information by as much as 80%, according to NuScale.

The tools are designed to help engineers retrieve engineering documentation, licensing evidence, technical standards, and institutional knowledge with greater speed while maintaining traceability to original controlled sources.

"NuScale is building a transformative deployment model to integrate NuScale Power Modules into nuclear power plants in the near-term, which requires executing with speed, precision, and confidence," said Dr. José Reyes, Chief Technology Officer of NuScale Power. "This partnership with Nuclearn and NPX will equip our teams with the right purpose-built AI tools — grounded in our extensive proprietary knowledge — to work more efficiently while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards."

Nuclearn, founded by nuclear industry veterans, describes its platform as purpose-built for nuclear professionals and capable of operating on-premise. NPX operates across Canada, the United States, and international nuclear markets, focusing on project management and AI implementation for nuclear organizations.

NuScale, founded in 2007 and based in Corvallis, Oregon, holds U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission design certification for its SMR technology, which it states is the first SMR to receive such certification.
