Vishay launches thick film power resistor series with 650 W output

Vishay Intertechnology (NYSE: VSH) introduced the RPWA 650 series of thick film power resistors, delivering 650 W of continuous power in a low-profile package, according to a company statement.

The Malvern, Pennsylvania-based company said the devices operate across a temperature range of -55 °C to +155 °C, using a baseplate design intended to transfer heat to an external heatsink. Resistance values range from 6.2 Ω to 1 MΩ, with tolerances down to ±5%.

The series supports a maximum operating voltage of 6,000 VDC, dielectric strength to 7,000 VRMS, and typical self-inductance of ≤40 nH. The devices also support repetitive pulse energy up to 3.5 J per pulse for 50 μs pulses.

Each unit integrates a power resistor with an optional embedded NTC temperature sensor in a single housing. Vishay said customizable cabling and a self-calibrating pressure mount eliminate the need for board-level soldering.

The RPWA 650 series is described as suitable for precharge, discharge, active discharge, power conversion, and snubber circuit functions in automotive, energy, industrial, medical, and avionics applications. The devices are RoHS-compliant and pending AEC-Q200 qualification.

Samples and production quantities are available, with lead times of 8 to 12 weeks.
