The Greenbrier Companies (NYSE: GBX) announced the completion of 50 gondola railcars built using SSAB Zero™ steel as part of a three-way collaboration with SSAB Americas and Alter Trading Corporation.
SSAB Zero™ steel is produced from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and is designed to achieve near-zero fossil carbon emissions. Greenbrier also incorporated high-strength steel into the railcar design to reduce overall weight while maintaining structural integrity, which the company says increases payload capacity and improves transportation efficiency.
The completed railcars will be delivered to Alter Trading, where they will transport recycled metals, including end-of-life steel, to SSAB's steelmaking facility in Iowa. The material will then be melted and used to produce new steel products, creating what the companies describe as a continuous recycling loop.
"This collaboration demonstrates the power of innovation across the supply chain," said Brian Comstock, Greenbrier Executive Vice President and President of the Americas. "Together with SSAB and Alter, we're demonstrating how collaboration can create measurable benefits across the value chain."
Greenbrier is headquartered in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and manufactures freight railcars in North America, Europe, and Brazil. Alter Trading Corporation, founded in 1898 and headquartered in St. Louis, operates 78 metal recycling facilities across eleven states. SSAB, whose shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm with a secondary listing on Nasdaq Helsinki, operates steel mills in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
