Universal Display unveils OLEDX, a new OLED device architecture

Universal Display Corporation (Nasdaq: OLED) introduced OLEDX, a proprietary device architecture for OLED displays, at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID 2026) in Busan, Korea.

The technology uses a transparent cathode, reflective anode, and nanoparticle outcoupling layer to redirect light that would otherwise remain trapped inside an OLED display. According to the company, the architecture is designed to improve light extraction and give display manufacturers greater control over how light is delivered to viewers.

Universal Display states that OLEDX is intended to work with existing OLED manufacturing approaches, which the company says would allow the industry to evaluate the technology without requiring new production methods.

The company lists three key capabilities for OLEDX: a path toward extracting 100% of light from an OLED device, ultra-wide viewing angles with reduced color shift, and customizable efficiency and viewing angle profiles across display form factors including smartphones, tablets, laptops, televisions, and automotive displays.

"OLEDX is designed to make every photon count," said Steven V. Abramson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Display Corporation. "By addressing one of the industry's longstanding challenges, OLEDX represents a new platform for advancing display performance and expanding what is possible in OLED design."

Dr. Julie Brown, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, said the platform "was designed with existing OLED manufacturing approaches in mind, enabling the industry to evaluate and explore the technology without requiring a fundamentally new production paradigm."

At IMID 2026, Dr. Mike Weaver, Vice President and Deputy Chief Technology Officer of PHOLED R&D, presented OLEDX as part of Universal Display's broader device architecture roadmap, which also includes Plasmonic OLED and Polariton-Enhanced Purcell research.

IMID 2026, organized by the Korean Information Display Society and the Society for Information Display, runs August 18–21 at BEXCO in Busan. Universal Display is a sponsor of the conference and plans to announce recipients of its Innovative Research and Pioneering Technology Awards following the IMID Awards Banquet on August 20.
