Volition's finger-prick sepsis test shows high lab correlation

VolitionRx Limited (NYSE American: VNRX) announced results showing that its lateral flow finger-prick prototype test produced results highly correlated with those of its established automated Nu.Q® NETs laboratory assay in critically ill sepsis patients.

The study, part of Volition's SUMMIT program, tested capillary blood and plasma samples from hospital patients in intensive care. Results showed a Spearman correlation of 0.85 and a Pearson correlation of 0.88 between the finger-prick lateral flow device and the CE-marked automated assay, according to the company.

The prototype measures H3.1 nucleosomes, which are markers associated with NETosis, a process linked to sepsis and other conditions. The lateral flow format does not require a centralized laboratory, and the company said it could be used in emergency departments, intensive care units, doctor's offices, or home settings.

Dr. Andrew Retter, Critical Care Lead and Medical Consultant at Volition, said the results represent "a significant step forward and a different kind of test from the one we have today," adding that it "materially reduces barriers to testing patients and facilitates nucleosome measurement at the bedside."

Volition cited an estimate of approximately 166 million sepsis cases worldwide annually, and referenced a published analysis finding that all-cause sepsis-related deaths in 2021 represented 31.5% of total global deaths, with the highest burden in lower-middle-income countries.

The company said it is pursuing partnerships with NGOs and companies operating in low-income countries to support commercialization. The SUMMIT program is carried out with financial support from the Walloon Region.

Volition's existing Nu.Q® NETs assay holds a CE Mark and is available in 27 European countries, running on the Immunodiagnostic Systems IDS i10® automated analyzer platform. The company is based in Henderson, Nevada, with research and development centered in Belgium.
